Message-ID: In light of the fact that a large minority of conservative politicians in Australia are opposed to implementing a Carbon Trading scheme, and that a majority of those appear to be opposed because they don't believe that human CO2 production is a major cause of climate change, I thought I should find out what sources of dissent from the majority science view there are, and how reputable they are. According to this article: http://www.csicop.org/si/show/can_a_reasonable_skeptic_support_climate_change_legislation/ from a *real* skeptic (as opposed to a doubter) basically says that the best the US dissenters can do is this: Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma has published a minority senate report in which he names 687 people whose opinion is that humans are not responsible for climate change. Of these - 27 people are actually not dissenters. - 55 had no science credentials at all, and many others identified as meteorologists proved to be weather reporters. - 551 (~80 percent) had no peer-reviewed publications bearing on climate science. - 103 do have some significant publications in the area. Now compare this against the IPCC, which had 2000 members, all of whom are considered to be significant publishers of climate-related research. The IPCC report, BTW, gives an over 90% probability that climate change is anthropogenic. I know of 3 scientists who claim that their work was in some way falsely represented in the IPCC report. So based on the two most prominent lists of people supporting or opposing the anthropogenic climate change hypothesis, the balance is 1997 vs 103. The position is summed up buy the author of the article above thusly: *That there is a big and growing scientific controversy over anthropogenic sources of global warming is almost certainly untrue. * *Or, the way I've been thinking about it is "95% of the scientists are 90% sure that climate change is caused by human CO2 emissions". |<* -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... We have a property along the shores of Lake Albert, and each week I see the destruction getting worse and worse. Our Meningie community has recently been told by the State Government that water from the tap is no longer safe to drink. Bottled water is going to be delivered to our doors this summer. As for our 20 thousand gallon rainwater tanks? That water is not safe to drink either, as dust which falls onto the roof, when mixed with rains turns the rainwater toxic. And it's going to get worse. Arsenic anyone? In the mid 80's my family left the Acid rains of eastern Europe for beautiful Australia. In the early 90's I watched the Aral Sea ecological disaster unfold in Russia. It was easy to justify it with: "the Russians are capable of any sorts of destruction. THey're nuts." But how could this very same be happening in a prosperous 'first world' country like Australia? And why doesn't anyone on the streets here care? This is insane. Internally berserk, Anna. Lately the manager has been making some very strange decisions such as getting rid of key volunteers, replacing local content with cheesy hit tunes and making changes to the studio that make it less functional, all with no meaningful communication with the volunteers. It's a great example of change management done badly. I missed the last meeting, but from the minutes it sounds even more fraught than than the last couple of meetings I was at. S* criticized M# for taking exception to M*?s comment about the Station Manager, likening it to her comments ?bagging? K*. A colloquial emphasis was used and apologized for. M# and P* became very agitated and physically and aggressively moved into his personal space. [The record taker found this highly disturbing]" The battle has leaked out on to the wiki page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2XX "As of 2007, 2XXfm hosts speciality music, talk, opinion and ethnic programmes run by over 200 individuals and community organisations. It used to take some programming from the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia Digital Delivery Network and the BBC World Service, however the arseholes now running the station removed the equipment necessary for this to occur before installing operating replacements." -m.
