The WikiLeaks advised proposal to build an international "new media haven" in Iceland, with the world's strongest press and whistleblower protection laws, and a "Nobel" prize for for Freedom of Expression, has unaminously passed the Icelandic Parliament. 50 votes were cast in favor, zero against, one abstained. Twelve members of parliament were not present. Vote results are available at http://www.althingi.is/dba-bin/atkvgr.pl?nnafnak=43014 One of the inspirations for the proposal was the dramatic August 2009 gagging of of Iceland's national broadcaster, RUV by Iceland's then largest bank, Kaupthing: http://wikileaks.org/wiki/Financial_collapse:_Confidential_exposure_analysis_of_205_compani es_each_owing_above_EUR45M_to_Icelandic_bank_Kaupthing,_26_Sep_2008 Two changes were made to the proposal from its original form as per the opinion of the parliament's general affairs committee [ http://www.althingi.is/altext/138/s/1329.html]. The first of these altered slightly the wording of the first paragraph so as to widen the arena for research. The second of these added two new items to the list of tasks for the government: - That the government should perform a detailed analysis, especially with respect to operational security, for the prospect of operating data centers in Iceland. - That the government should organize an international conference in Iceland regarding the changes to the legal environment being caused by expansion of cloud computing, data havens, and the judicial state of the Internet. Video footage from the proposal's vote will be available at: http://www.althingi.is/altext/hlusta.php?raeda=rad20100616T033127&horfa=1 http://www.althingi.is/altext/hlusta.php?raeda=rad20100616T033306&horfa=1 For details of the proposal and press contacts, please see http://www.immi.is From andynehl at optusnet.com.au Wed Jun 16 23:47:39 2010 From: andynehl at optusnet.com.au (andynehl@optusnet.com.au) Date: Wed Jun 16 23:47:51 2010 Subject: [eclectika] Seattle Police Officer punches young woman in the head in arrest for jay-walking Message-ID: <201006170447.o5H4ld66002027@mail01.syd.optusnet.com.au> http://www.mynorthwest.com/?nid=11&sid=332124 From woody at wudee.net Thu Jun 17 00:42:05 2010 From: woody at wudee.net (Woody Wood) Date: Thu Jun 17 00:42:16 2010 Subject: [eclectika] Seattle Police Officer punches young woman in the head in arrest for jay-walking In-Reply-To: <201006170447.o5H4ld66002027@mail01.syd.optusnet.com.au> References: <201006170447.o5H4ld66002027@mail01.syd.optusnet.com.au> Message-ID: Thanks Andy - this comes hot on the heels of a recent Seattle PD case of mistaken identity:* Video of SPD officer kicking prone man sparks internal investigation* http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2011807341_copinvestigation08m.html '...the gang detective, Shandy Cobane, can be heard on video telling a man lying on a concrete sidewalk, "I'm going to beat the [expletive] Mexican piss out of you, homey. National Pork Board is the owner of THE OTHER WHITE MEAT? in the United States and elsewhere around the world, and owns the following federal trademark registrations. Excellent source of sparkles. The legal rationale in these situations is often that you can't let someone so much as whisper your trademark in vain lest it be genericized or otherwise diluted; thereby implying that the threat is empty, and just to demonstrate active defense of the mark should a 'real' case ever arise. Message-ID: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/06/24/conroy_out/ Speculation was rife this morning (or evening, over in Australia) that controversial Communications Minister and architect of Australia?s great firewall project, Stephen Conroy may shortly be for the chop. In his place, it is suggested, Australia?s new PM Julia Gillard might prefer the more conciliatory ? and also better-informed - approach of Senator Kate Lundy. If so, this is likely to prove a victory for those opposed to Conroy?s hard line on internet censorship, as Ms Lundy has made it clear over the last few months that she prefers to win support from Australia?s voters for an opt-in filter ? instead of imposing a mandatory filter from the centre, which is the hardline stance favoured by the present Communications Minister. Support for Lundy comes from within industry and politics alike. Reports in ITWire and APCMag suggest Electronic Frontiers Australia (EFA) chair Colin Jacobs would definitely prefer Lundy, claiming she understands the technology industry better than Conroy and has good relationships in the sector. He is reported as saying: "The filter has dominated and totally tarnished Conroy?s reputation when it comes to these issues." A rather more forthright view is expressed by Internode engineer Mark Newton who said: "Conroy is a laughing stock in the IT world. "You could put a pot plant in the ministry and get a better response." A key difference between Lundy and Conroy appears to lie in their respective personal styles. Lundy is seen as being "more nuanced" and more consultative than Conroy. She also seemed more prepared to work within the parliamentary committee structure and to listen to different points of view. In contrast, Conroy?s personal demeanour has not made him popular. He is known for his "tough parliamentary style", which may well have proven an asset in negotiations on the National Broadband Network. This is one of the biggest tasks currently in the Communications Portfolio, and how well or badly the Communications Minister performs in this area will have major implications for future government spending as well as Australia?s communications infrastructure over the next decades. While speculation at a time of political turmoil may be inevitable, more cynical analysis suggests that Conroy may yet be saved. According to Jacobs, the push to replace Rudd with Gillard came from the Australian Labor Party?s right faction ? a bloc which also boasts Conroy as a member. In his view, it would have to take some ?pretty crazy? moves to see him losing his portfolio. Nonetheless, there was general agreement by both interviewees that the communications brief has been handled badly. According to Newton: "I don?t think Australia has ever in its history had a successful communications minister." Jacobs agreed: "As far back as I can remember, Australia has been poorly served by communications ministers." ? A few DSTC alumni - Michael Henderson, Alejandro Metke and I - have written a jigsaw puzzle app for the iPad. If any iPad owners want to check it out (I know Lochy for one is a massive fan of anything Apple), hit up http://www.puzzlement.com.au (which has a link to the app store). Also feel free to drop us a line if you have any comments. Jim. -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
